Give the conversation a clear job
A broad request such as “entertain me” leaves many decisions unspecified. A more helpful starting point is “Help me invent a friendly fictional guide for a floating city. Ask one question at a time.” That gives the interaction a subject, a format, and a pace. You can change any of those choices as you learn what you enjoy.
Keep the initial task small enough to judge. Try naming three fictional locations, writing a short scene, or discussing a favorite hobby in general terms. You should be able to tell whether the response fits your request without relying on a claim about the system's personality or understanding.
Keep fiction and factual information distinct
A character can sound confident while inventing information. NIST's generative AI risk profile describes the risk of confidently presented errors and internally inconsistent outputs. If an exchange moves from imaginative play into a real decision, pause the fiction and check reliable information independently. Invented citations and fluent wording are not evidence.
For example, a fictional sea captain can describe an imaginary harbor. Advice about an actual trip needs current sources for transport, weather, and entry requirements. Marking a scene as fictional keeps creative freedom separate from practical accuracy.
Choose a useful ending
End with a small artifact you control: a character sketch, a list of story questions, or an idea to try offline. Save only what you want to keep in a location you understand.
