Worldbuilding workshop Xpress Lab

Build a fictional world from three useful rules

Create a coherent imaginary setting without writing an encyclopedia before your first scene.

For character builders & scene makers

The Lab approach asks whether the world's rules can be shown on screen. A town where messages travel by kite gives you movement, props, and a practical obstacle when the wind changes. Test one adult character's ordinary task before expanding the setting's history. If the audience could infer a rule from an action, you may not need a speech explaining it. Use the conversation to propose options, then decide what your scene actually establishes.

A strong fictional scene begins with a clear premise and a character who wants something. Explore AI conversation through the lens of dialogue, playful invention, and thoughtful limits.

An idea to try / Xpress Lab

Show one world rule through action

  1. Invent a fictional town with kite-delivered messages.
  2. Give an adult courier one ordinary delivery and a changing wind.
  3. Outline three visual beats that reveal the rule without an explanation.

A fictional creative exercise. Adapt or skip any step to suit your own boundaries.

01

Choose rules that create choices

For a fictional example, imagine an island where messages travel only by kite, strong winds arrive at dusk, and every household keeps a spare reel of string. The transport rule affects a courier's work, the weather creates a deadline, and the custom gives a character a resource. Each detail can influence a scene.

Ask for three possible rules, then choose the combination you find most interesting. Avoid adding unusual details solely to make the world larger. A rule becomes useful when it changes a decision, creates a problem, or helps explain how ordinary life works in the setting.

02

Test the world through an ordinary task

Send a fictional character to buy breakfast, return a borrowed object, or deliver an invitation. Ask how the world's rules affect that simple activity. A small scene reveals more practical gaps than a broad request to describe every historical era, government, and species at once.

Keep your own record of established facts. If an answer invents a new rule that contradicts the earlier scene, decide whether to revise the rule or reject the new detail. You are the editor of the setting. The conversation can suggest possibilities, but it does not determine what becomes part of your final project.

03

Expand only where the story needs depth

When a character enters a market, develop the market. When a journey reaches a border, decide how the border works. This keeps the project manageable and helps each new detail serve a purpose. Give your inventions original names and label shared excerpts as fictional, especially if the presentation resembles a travel guide or documentary.

  • Place: one environment with a recognizable atmosphere.
  • Limitation: one rule that shapes action.
  • Custom: one habit that makes daily life distinctive.
  • Test: one ordinary task inside the setting.

A few useful answers

Common questions

Do I need a map before writing?

Only if it helps the scene. A short list of locations and their relationships may be enough. Add a map when distance or movement becomes important.

How do I avoid endless planning?

Set a small limit, such as three rules and one scene. Write the scene before adding more background, then develop only the details that the story actually needs.
